| Unit 06 : FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS KEEP COOL Read the text carefully then answer the given questions FEELINGS Britishand American people are similar in many ways, but in expressingfeelingsthey haven’t much in common. Nearly all Americans believe thatit isbetter to share what they think or feel than hide it .A greatmany ofthem except their relatives and friends to say, “I love you”,“I carefor you”, or “ I ‘m glad to have a friend like you” Almost allof themenjoy talking about their own experiences , and a few of themwill go sofar as to share ideas with foreign visitors the first timethey comeinto contact with them . When some of them are upset theyprefer to crythan retain their tears .Few Americans consider it bad toshow anger inpublic. The great majority of them would rather let allof it out andsay what they feel than bottle it up inside and makematters worse.(§1) Incontrast to this is the traditional Britishreserve, a national tendencyto avoid showing strong emotion of anykind. The British like to keep astiff upper lip. In other words, theydon’t like showing or talkingabout their feelings. They rather preferhiding them because people whoreveal their emotions are thought to beweak and bad- mannered. Forexample , showing anger in public isconsidered to be a sign that aperson hasn’t much character. So fewBritish people would dare vent evena little anger in public places. They give little attention to peoplewho complain in public i.e , aboutbeing kept waiting in a traffic jamor in a restaurant .They maypretend not to hear them in order to avoidgetting involved.(§2) This attitude is far less common today than itused to be , but a lotof British people , especially among the elderly, still take a greatdeal of trouble to appear strong .Most British menand women are stillembarrassed when they see somebody crying , and donot know whether itis better to pretend they have not noticed or to tryand comfort them.Women are more likely to respond than men and will puttheir arm roundthe person or touch their shoulder.(§3) Many Britishyouths nowshow feelings of affection in public. Women sometimes kisseach otheron the cheek as a greeting and people may greet or say goodbye to eachother with a hug. Lovers hold hands in public and sometimesembrace andkiss each other, but many elderly people do not like to seethis. However , when British people are part of a crowd they arelessworried about expressing their emotions. Football crowds sing andcheerwhen they score. Even cricket supporters, who had a reputationforbeing much quieter, enjoy cheering as well as giving thetradionalpolite applause (§4) 1- What type is the text ?/…………………………………………………………… 2- Answer the given questions according to the text a- How many Americans believe that it is better to express feelings rather than hide them§ …………………………………………………………………………………………….. b- What they would rather do than retain their tears? ……………………………………………………………………………………………… c- How much attention do the British pay to people who complain in public? ………………………………………………………………………………………………. d- What do football players do when they score a goal? ……………………………………………………………………………………………….. e-Whichof the following terms best summarizes what the author saysaboutBritish and American people = extrovert, introvert, phlegmatic?Explain ………………………………………………………………………………………………… 3- What or who do the underlined words refer to in the text a- A great many of them………. §1……………………..
